Mysore

Mysore is the cultural capital of Karnataka and is well known for the celebrations that take place during the annual festival of Dussehra. Mysore is called the ‘ City of Palaces’ because of the number of palaces situated in the city, including Amba Vilas which is popularly known as Mysore Palace. Chamundeshwari temple is a popular place of religious worship located on the top of Chamundi Hills. Mysore also lends its name to the Mysore silk saree, which is a traditional garment worn by Indian women, made out of pure silk and gold zari.

Hampi is a village in northern Karnataka, located within the ruins of Vijayanagara, the former capital of the Vijayanagara empire. The village continues to be an important religious centre, as it houses the Virupaksha Temple. The village of Hampi contains several other monuments belonging to the old city. Hampi is also called ‘The City of Ruins’. The Vijayanagara ruins are listed as the Group of Monuments at Hampi as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Coorg

Coorg is a district located in south-western Karnataka, which is famous for its scenic beauty and coffee estates. There are several places of tourist interest, including Talakaveri, the place where one of India’s largest rivers, Kaveri originates; Abbey Falls, a picturesque waterfall and Nagarahole, a national park and wildlife resort.

Gokarna

Gokarna is a village in which is a Hindu pilgrimage centre as well as a tourist destination in India, famous for its beaches. The Mahabaleshvara Temple is one of the major temples in Gokarna. Gokarna is also famous for its beautiful beaches and landscapes, the Gokarna beach, Kudle beach, Om beach, Half moon beach and Paradise beach.

Ooty

Ootacamund, popularly known as Ooty, is a popular hill station located in the Nilgiri Hills, in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, which borders Karnataka. Doddabetta Peak is the highest point in the Nilgiri Hills and offers a spectacular view of the town and district. Pykara Lake and Pykara falls are popular picnic spots. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is one of the oldest mountain railways in India. It has been declared as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.
