The National Law School of India University
was conceptualized as a pace-setter and a testing ground for experiments
in legal education and was established on August 29, 1987 in Bangalore
under the National Law School of India University Act, 1986, through
the efforts of the Bar Council of India with the co-operation
of the Government of Karnataka, the Bangalore University and the
Karnataka State Bar Council. The Chief Justice of India is the
Visitor and the Chairman of the Bar Council of India is the Chairman
of the General Council of NLSIU.
The first batch of students joined the integrated
five year B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) course on July 1, 1988 and since
then, the University has gone from strength to strength. A large
number of retired Judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts
as well as Senior Advocates have assisted the University in its
teaching and research programs which has resulted in research
projects, one-credit courses, workshops and other legal activities
far beyond the mandatory courses taught in NLSIU.
The University also has a vibrant student community
in the form of the Student Bar Association. Among other things,
the Association encourages student initiatives through Activity-Based
Committees in various co-curricular and extra-curricular areas
as varied as debating, event management, sports, academic support,
law and technology and legal writing.
The students have the
privilege of being taught by the best legal professors and guest
lecturers which include personalities like Mr. Fali Nariman, Mr.
Soli Sorabjee, Mr. Ram Jethmalani etc. NLS has regularly organized
various roundtables and conferences on the latest legal and policy
issues and submitted its recommendations to high profile committees
like the Constitution Review Committee, Malimath Committee, Vijay
Kelkar Committee etc.
