January 23rd to 25th, 2010 Mr. Ashish Kaushik, Ms. Praveena Nair S, Mr. Kumar Abhijeet I LL.M Post-graduates participated for the first time in The National Moot Court Competition for the Post Graduate (LL M) students which was organised by the Department of Law, University of Pune . T hey bagged the "Best Memorial Prize" and were adjudged as the "Runners up" in the competition. 5. 29 th to 31 st January, 2010. Mr. V. Niranjan - Speaker V B.A.,LL.B, Mr Raag Yadava – Speaker II B.A.,LL.B Mr. Gautam Bhatia Researcher IV B.A.,LL.B, Mr. Subhand Nair – Researcher III B.A.,LL.B have won the South India Rounds of the Philip C Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, 2010, organised by the University of Madras : Mr. V. Niranjan was declared the Best Speaker overall as well as the Best Speaker in the Final Round, in which NLSIU prevailed over NALSAR, Hyderabad. Mr. Raag Yadava was adjudged the Second Best Speaker overall. The team also won the Fourth-Best Memorial Award. Along with three other teams, the team will now represent India at the International Rounds of the Competition, to be held in Washington DC in March. The team is coached by Professor Mrinal Satish. 6. 6 th to 10 th February, 2010 Apoorva Paranjpe , V B.A.,LL.B, Chitralekha Das, Sindhu Sarma, Varun T Mathew , IV B.A.,LL.B, ICC International Mediation Competition to be held at Paris 7. 11th to 14th February, 2010 Niyati Gandhi , I B.A.,LL.B , i s awarded the Honourable Mention at Harvard National Model United Nations 2010 at Harvard. She was given this Award for representing Sudan in the African Union Committee. 8. 12 th- 14 th February,2010 Vipul Nanda, IV B.A LL.B , Kalrav Mishra , V B.A LL.B, Winners of the RVDT hosted by RV College of Engineering, Bangalore from . Also Vipul Nanda was adjudged to be the Best Speaker in the Debate. Ramakrishna, Professor of Law, Ministry of HRD Chair on IPR for providing excellent guidance and congratulates the students on their stupendous achievement. 10. 18 th to 21 st February, 2011 Reeba Muthalaly , III B.A.,LL.B , is accepted from a highly selective pool of international applicants to attend the Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations (HPAIR) On-Campus Conference in Cambridge as a representative of National Law School of India University. Acceptance to attend the HPAIR conference represents an extraordinary accomplishment deserving of support and recognition. The Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations is a partnership between the students and faculty of Harvard University , offering a sustained academic programme and forum of exchange to facilitate discussion of the most important economic, political and social issues relevant to the Asia-Pacific region. Past speakers at the conferences include former South Korean President and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Kim Dae Jung, Governor General of Australia Peter Hollingworth, and Singapore President S.R.Nathan. The delegates to the HPAIR conference are top university students, chosen from an international pool of over 1000 applicants. 11. 18th-21st February,2010 . March 2010 Kushal Bhimjiani, V B.A.,LL.B, Got her Essay shortlisted for the Semi-Final Round of Habitat Young Visionary Award conducted by the prestigious India Habitat Centre, New Delhi 20. 20th to 27th March, 2010. Niharika Rao, Sowjhanya Sankaran , III B.A.,LL.B , Shalini Iyengar , IVB.A LL.B, The Jean-Pictet Concours International Humanitarian Law Competition was founded in 1988 and completed its 22nd year in Orford, Canada between This year's selection procedure saw 109 teams beginning the selection process, 87 teams from 47 countries completing the three written exams which constitute the first segment of the competition and 45 teams finally participating in the final oral rounds for the year 2009-10. The Competition aims at taking “law out of the books” and tests students both on their knowledge of the law and their ability to use the law. National Law School of India Unversity (NLSIU), Bangalore , participated in the Competition for the first time and were one of only two teams selected for the final rounds of the Competition from India . The N LSI U team qualified into the semi-finals and Shalini Iyengar was declared one of the three best speakers in their group and was nominated for the Gilbert Appollis award. This year's finals saw the presence of Justice Phillippe Kirsch, President of the ICC, in addition to other noted luminaries in the field of International Humanitarian Law who judged the Competition throughout the week. 21. March 21 to 27, 2010 V. Niranjan Speaker, V B.A.,LL.B, Raag Yadava Speaker, II B.A.,LL.B, Gautam Bhatia Researcher, IVB.A., LL.B, Shubhang Nair , Researcher, III B.A.,LL.B The National Law School of India University reached the Quarter-Finals of the 51st Annual Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, held in Washington DC . This is the third time in succession that the NLSIU has reached the last 8 or beyond of the Jessup International Rounds. The NLSIU Memorial was declared the Fourth Best in the World. The team is coached by Prof. Mrinal Satish. 22. 26th to 27th March, 2010 Ms. Kunal Ambasta , III B.A.,LL.B, student's paper on the constitutionality of nacro-analysis has been selected for presentation at the conference on "Emerging Issues on Law and Justice in the Coming Decade" organized by the Delhi University from . The title of the paper is " Narco-Analysis as an Investigative Tool: Violating the Right to Silence of the Accused." 23. 26th to 28th March, 2010 Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition Coordianted by: Mr. Mrinal Satish and Moot Court Society (Students) NLSIU organised the ISRO Sponsored National Funding Rounds of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court competition. Eighteen teams representing law colleges from across the country participated in the competition. The preliminary rounds of the competition were held on March 27. Each team was required to moot twice against two other teams participating in the competition. These teams were UILS (Chandigarh), Dr. Ambedkar School of Excellence in Law (Chennai), SNDT Womens University (Pune), NUJS (Kolkata), HNLU (Raipur), NALSAR (Hyderabad), NLIU (Bhopal) and NLSIU (Bangalore). The four winners of the quarter finals NUJS (Kolkata), HNLU (Raipur), Dr. Ambedkar School of Excellence in Law (Chennai) and NLSIU (Bangalore) met in the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, which were also in the knock-out format, NUJS defeated HNLU and NLSIU defeated Dr. Ambedkar School of Excellence in Law, and the two teams qualified for the finals of the competition. The Finals of the competition were judged by Hon'ble Mr. Justice Madan B Lokur, Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Hon'ble Mr. Justice Sanjib Banerjee, Judge of the Calcutta High Court and Mr. Aditya Sondhi, Advocate, Bangalore (An alumnus of NLSIU). In the finals, the team representing NUJS, comprising of Mr. Jay Sanklecha, Mr. Kumar Ashutosh and Ms. Nivedita Sen defeated the team from NLSIU, comprising of Mr. Aditya Banavar, Mr. Shenoy Prasad and Ms. Vatsala Sahay. The team from NUJS will be funded by ISRO to participate in the Regional Rounds of the competition, to be held in Sydney in mid-April. The Best Memorial award was bagged by NLSIU, whereas the Best Oralist award was bagged by Mr. Abhilaksh Grover from NALSAR. 24. April 9th to 11th 2010 Nishita Vasan, Sowjhanya Shankaran, III B.A.,LL.B, Siddharth Basu, I B.A.,LL.B, were awarded best adjudicators at the MS Ramaiah Memorial Debate organised by the MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore 25. 14th and 15th April, 2010 Ms. Lipsa Acharyya III B.A.,LL.B, 6 th Annual International Student Conference on Emperical Sciences at Ismir University , Turkey 26. April 25th to April 30th 2010 Ms. Kushal Bhimjiani , IV B.A.,LL.B. , The oikos Model WTO is an international event with 60 students simulating the regular WTO minister conferences. The Model WTO 2010 with the topic Climate Change and Trade took place . The simulation was held in St.Gallen and at the WTO in Geneva . The participants had the mandate "to negotiate lower tariffs on Environmental Goods and Services (EGS) and diminish the barriers for the use of patents helping to improve the sustainability of production." Kushal Bhimjiani, simulated the role of the chinese delegate in the GATTS committee. Along with 4 other students from Australia , Taiwan , China and Uganda , this team collectively the Best Country Delegation at the final declaration of negotiations at the WTO. 27. April 2010 The team comprising Adithya Banavar, Prasad Shenoy and Vatsala Sahay represented NLSIU in the 2010 Manfred Lachs International Space Law Moot Court Competition. They were the Runners up in the National Rounds, held in NLSIU (March 2010), and in the Asia-Pacific Rounds, held in Sydney (April 2010). The team won the Best Memorial Award at the National Rounds. Adithya Banavar was adjudged the second best speaker in the Asia-Pacific Rounds. 28. June 2nd, 2010 . Ms. Nishita Vasan, Ms.Soujanya Sankaran , III B.A.,LL.B, Their Article titled '*Recovery of Money Paid under Mistake of Law*' will be published in the 42nd edition of the Bracton Law Journal which will be launched on The Bracton Law Journal is an annual journal published by the University of Exeter, UK. The first edition was published in 1965 and the 2010 edition (containing their article) will be the 42nd edition. 29. June 2010 Brijesh Rajak , III year B.A.,LL.B., His novel "Join the Bar" depicting the lives of Law Students in NLS is being published by Universal Law Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi. June 2010 Mr.Konark Sharma , LL.M, has got his essay adjudged as the best amongst the entries received for the 'Institute of Intellectual Property Studies Annual Essay Competition conducted by Intellectual Property Rights', Mithibai College, SVKM Campus, Vile Parle (West), Mumbai and has won an award of Rs. 10,000/- for his essay. 32. 7th to 10 th July, 2010 Mr. Rishi Shroff , V year B.A.,LL.B(Hons) student has written an article titled “ Functioning of the United Nations Organisation: Retrospect and Prospect” for 3 rd International Law Students Association International Summer Conference organised by Bahcesehir University, Istanbul, Turkey. 33. 13 th July, 2010 Mr. Jagriti Singh IV year B.A.,LL.B(Hons) student has got her article “Commercial Surrogacy” published in Nepal Newspaper REPUBLICA OPINION. Topic: Blogs, Twitter, Social Media and the Legal Practise – Legal and Ethical Implications. 39. 25th October, 2010 Mr. Gautam Bhatia has won the Rhodes Scholarship for the year 2010-1. This is the fifth year running that NLSIU has won the Rhodes Scholarship and the Fifteenth time in total. 40. October 2010 Tarun Krishnakumar, I Year, BA.LLB was adjudged to be in the Overall Top 10 and won the Best First Year entry award in the 2nd Ashurst-NALSAR Student Law Review Contract Drafting competition.(held during August-October 2010) 41. 4th November, 2010 Ms . Shalini Iyengar and Ms. Preeta Dhar , both Final year students were declared winners of the 3 rd Rizvi Law College Moot Court Competition conducted by The Rizvi Law College from the 23 rd to 26 th September, 2010 where over 24 law colleges from all over India participated. 42. 4 th November, 2010 Mr. Varun T Mathew , final year student won the Best Advocate Award at the 7 th Nani Palkhivala Memorial Tax Law Moot which was conducted between 7 th and 9 th October by the Government Law College, Mumbai and the All India Federation of Tax Practitioners (AIFTP) at the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) in Bombay. He has also won two internships at Nishith Desai & Associates and ELP, Bombay . 43. 11th November, 2010 Mr. Varun Srikanth and Mr. Arun Binoy Mattaman thrid year B.A.,LL.B.(Hons.) have published their article: "Regulating Online Gambling: The Indian Perspective" in "PRIVATE LAW:RIGHTS,D UTI ES & CON FLIC TS, Ed.,by Sylvia M.Kierkegaard, Patrick Kierkegaard (Assoc.Ed) (2010 International Association of IT Lawyers (IAITL). 44. 13th November, 2010 Students of NLSIU interacted with young lawyers of the Junior Lawyers Division, UK . A delegation of lawyers from the Junior Lawyers Division (JLD) of the British Law Society was in India . They were here together with Raleigh , a UK charity, which focuses its work chiefly on helping spreading greater awareness of global issues. In this context, the Junior Lawyers Division of the British Law Scoeity together with Khaitan and Co., India , organized an interaction.The event provided a chance to participants to interact with, and learn from both London based lawyers and students, as well as prominent NLS alumni and other Indian lawyers who also attended the event. The event comprised of presentations on both the Indian and British Legal systems accompanied by discussions on the top issues which junior lawyers in each jurisdiction face. This was also followed by an informal interaction amongst all the participants. 45. 11th to 13th December, 2010 . Ms.Sahana Manjesh and Ms.Geetha Hariharan (III year B.A. LL.B. students) have done NLSIU proud by being adjudged as the Best and the Second Best Oralists of the Ist Oxford India Moot Court 2010 at the National Rounds for qualification to the Monroe E. Price International Media Law Moot Court Competition held from 11th to 13th December, 2010. The moot was organised by the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy at Oxford University , along with NLU, Delhi and NUJS, Kolkata. NLSIU emerged Runners-Up at the event and with its second place finish, NLSIU qualified for the International Rounds in March 2011.
