The Jean-Pictet Concours International Humanitarian Law Competition was founded in 1988 and completed its 22nd year in Orford, Canada between 20th & 27th March, 2010. This year’s selection procedure saw 109 teams beginning the selection process, 87 teams from 47 countries completing the three written exams which constitute the first segment of the competition and 45 teams finally participating in the final oral rounds for the year 2009-10. The Competition aims at taking “law out of the books” and tests students both on their knowledge of the law and their ability to use the law. National Law School of India Unversity (NLSIU), Bangalore, participated in the Competition for the first time and were one of only two teams selected for the final rounds of the Competition from India. The NLSIU team qualified into the semi-finals and Shalini Iyengar was declared one of the three best speakers in their group and was nominated for the Gilbert Appollis award. This year’s finals saw the presence of Justice Phillippe Kirsch, President of the ICC, in addition to other noted luminaries in the field of International Humanitarian Law who judged the Competition throughout the week.
