Aarti Mundkur has a background in law and social sciences. Aarti is a founding member of the Alternative Law Forum (ALF), Bengaluru, where she spent a number of years working broadly in the area of women and violence. She subsequently set up her own law practice. As a litigator in various courts for over 18 years, her main areas of litigation include family law, juvenile justice, and criminal law.
Aarti’s research interests enclose themes of conjugality, gender and family law. The state of legal aid in India has long concerned her and her practice has been dedicated to ensuring competent representation for individuals who are often underserved in the courtroom. Further, she is keen to explore areas of law that affect and impact diverse marginalised communities, thereby centering questions of their access to the legal system.
Aarti has a BA in Economics from Mumbai University, and an MA in Social Work from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. She completed her LLB from Bangalore University, and her PhD from NLSIU, Bengaluru.
