The legal profession is the inheritor of a rich tradition and history which shaped not only the past but also the present of our nation. Beyond the mastery of statues and case laws, its has been the ethos of the legal profession which has guided and inspired generations of lawyers. This course seeks to acquaint the students to this rich history, present a comprehensive picture of the legal profession in India, and introduce them to the ethical questions and dilemmas facing the profession. Going forward, the course will then introduce the students to the various rules and legislations governing professional conduct for lawyers in India. Finally, it will contemplate on the contemporary challenges facing the legal profession.

‘Professional Ethics’ is a mandatory course required for obtaining the law degree as mandated by the Bar Council of India. It is also a core component in the Bar and Advocate-on- Record examinations. These emphasise the importance and indispensable nature of professional ethics for lawyers.
