Constitutional Foundations of the State in India is a foundational course that introduces undergraduate law students to the theory, doctrine, and practice of constitutional law in India. This is a core course on law for the MPP first year cohort. The course provides an introduction to the Indian constitution and its theoretical underpinnings. It offers a general introduction to the function played by a constitution, the specific features of the Indian Constitution, how its constitutional design has created institutions of governance, entrenched rights, and addressed concerns of social justice. This course will provide a framework for understanding the powers (and the limits of those powers) of public (and private) players to impact civil liberties, property rights, access to justice, and the functioning of constitutionalism and democracy in India.
