Profile
Muhammad Ali Khan is an advocate practicing in the Supreme Court of India. He is currently the Additional Advocate General in the Supreme Court for the state of Karnataka. Prior to this, he was the Additional Advocate General in the Supreme Court for the State of Chhattisgarh.
He has appeared before the Supreme Court in a number of constitutional matters. He was a counsel for eight political parties in the constitutional challenge to the Bihar Special Intensive Revision, for the principal opposition party in its challenges to Aadhar, the CAA and the 2024 Amendments to the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, among others. He is currently appearing for the state of Karnataka in the ongoing Presidential Reference on Governors powers. He is also a member of the Commission on Environmental Law at the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Previously, Khan served as an Officer on Special Duty to the Minister for Rural Development and Advisor on Law and Policy to the Minister for Environment and Forests, Government of India. In these roles, he was involved in the drafting of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, and the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010, as well as key amendments to the Wildlife Protection Act and the Coastal Regulation Zone Notification, 2011.
He began his career at Amarchand Mangaldas & Suresh A. Shroff & Co., in the disputes resolution team. He has delivered talks at the Harvard Kennedy School (on public policy challenges), the Yale School of Law (on tribal rights and conservation), and the World Bank (on land acquisition law). He has been awarded the Young India Fellowship by Georgetown University and was selected for the International Visitors Leadership Programme by the United States Government.
