We congratulate Kartik Kalra, a 2026 graduate of NLSIU, on receiving the Singhvi-Trinity Scholarship to undertake the LLM at the University of Cambridge!

The Singhvi-Trinity Scholarship is a fully funded academic award at the University of Cambridge, jointly established by Trinity College, Cambridge and Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Senior Advocate and Member of Parliament. Formally instituted in 2022 to support exceptional Indian citizens pursuing a Master of Laws (LLM), the program provides comprehensive financial support and automatic membership into Trinity College. The scholarship’s core mission is to cultivate future global legal leaders capable of representing India on the international stage. Now in its fifth academic cycle, the scholarship has been awarded to Kartik, marking a milestone as the first recipient selected from the National Law School of India University (NLSIU).

About Kartik Kalra

Kartik Kalra is an alumnus of NLSIU Bengaluru (Class of 2026) who specializes in constitutional and commercial law. He has established a strong track record in academic research, publication, and international dispute resolution. His scholarship on succession frameworks for non-heterosexual marriages was notably cited and discussed in the Supreme Court of India. Kartik has assisted senior counsel on landmark litigations—including marriage equality, marital rape criminalisation, affirmative action, and the recent Sabarimala review. He has previously represented NLSIU at global competitions like the Jessup moot. Following his LLM at Cambridge, where he intends to deepen his public and private law expertise, Kartik will join Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer, a global law firm with headquarters in London, England, and Sydney, Australia.

Reflecting on his journey, Kartik expressed gratitude to his mentors, “This scholarship is the result of the many opportunities I have had to learn from an extraordinary community of professors, mentors, and lawyers. I am grateful to Prof. (Dr.) Aparna Chandra for inspiring me to see the vast potential of constitutional law, Prof. (Dr.) Sudhir Krishnaswamy for teaching me the value of precision in legal argument, and Prof. Kunal Ambasta for showing me the jurisprudential questions underlying seemingly ordinary cases. I am also deeply grateful to Dr. Gautam Bhatia for giving my ideas a platform on his blog, and to Adv. Shivam Singh, Senior Adv. Karuna Nundy, and Mr. Meyyappan Nagappan for their mentorship and for giving me the chance to contribute to their important cases.”

Kartik also expressed his gratitude to Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi,“I am extremely grateful to Dr. Singhvi for instituting this scholarship and enabling me to access the remarkable opportunity to study at the University of Cambridge. He is a mentor to Singhvi-Trinity scholars, and I look forward to working towards the ideals that the scholarship seeks to advance.”

We wish Kartik the very best for his journey ahead!
