The course is meant to introduce students to the basic foundational principles of criminal law, including the constituent elements of a crime (actus reus and mens rea), principles of causation and concurrence, principles of liability, defences and offences in the Indian Penal Code (IPC)/ Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), as well as inchoate offences. The course will be reading-heavy, with a focus on close and critical reading of cases. Students are expected to read cases assigned for each class, and come prepared to discuss them.
