This course would be useful for students of both LLB/LLM and MPP program at NLSIU, since it takes the discussions beyond the basics of environmental law and statutes in India.

With a mix of theoretical/ conceptual readings on Environmental Justice, as well as tracing some important case laws with reference to prominent PILs around environmental concerns and examining what CAG of India has done in the field of environmental auditing, it would be an idea choice for those interested in Environmental Law and Policy in India.

This course tries to engage with the idea of ‘environmental justice’ both in its abstract, conceptual form as well as in its appeal as a ‘mobilising force’ for environmental movements and activists. It attempts to do so by revisiting the legal debates on number of environmental themes. This course would attempt to expose the students to tension between law and justice, would provide them an opportunity to discuss some major environmental case laws threadbare and expose them to an emerging genre within constitutional audit institution’s work, i.e. environmental auditing.

The course content will be delivered through lectures, discussions, and reflections on ongoing environmental debates. Beside academic writings and court proceedings (petitions, orders, judgments etc.), the course will include documentary films that speak to questions of environmental justice.
