About the Fellowships

The NLSIU Research Fellowships programme offers exciting opportunities for scholars to advance innovative and high-impact research in law, social sciences, and public policy. Designed for researchers at different stages of their academic and professional journey, the programme invites scholars to spend dedicated time at NLSIU working on their research and engaging with the University’s diverse intellectual community.

In selecting the Fellows, the University is committed to supporting research that:

(i) advances fresh theoretical perspectives and contributes meaningfully to knowledge systems; and/or

(ii) generates robust empirical evidence, identifies practical pathways for institutional and system reform, and bridges scholarship, policy and practice.

We welcome both interdisciplinary and disciplinary research.

The Research Fellowships programme builds on the Academic Fellowship (AF) programme, which has successfully graduated three cohorts into academic positions and PhDs around the world since its inception. Established in 2025–26, the Research Fellowships Programme carries this legacy forward with an expanded vision: to create an even more dynamic platform for cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary engagement, and impactful scholarship.

Duration

The duration of each fellowship varies. Please refer to the Research Fellowships page for more information.

Location

Fellows are expected to be on campus during their fellowship period.

Remuneration

The starting monthly remuneration for each fellowship category is as follows:

1. Graduate Research Fellowship: Rs 50,000/- per month
2. Postdoctoral Fellowship: Rs 1,20,000/- per month
3. University Research Fellowship: Rs 2,00,000/- per month

The fellowship remuneration will be determined based on the candidate’s educational background, qualifications, relevant experience, and overall suitability for the fellowship.
