The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru invites applications for one full-time position of Research Assistant at the Chair on Consumer Law and Practice (CLAP) for an initial period of one year (extendable based on performance and project requirements). The position will be based at the NLSIU campus in Bengaluru.

A. About the Chair on Consumer Law and Practice (CLAP)

The Chair on Consumer Law and Practice (CLAP) was established in August 2008 at NLSIU by the Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. The Chair is the first dedicated academic initiative of its kind in India and serves as a national centre for research, teaching, training, policy engagement, and capacity building in the field of consumer law and consumer protection. It functions as a think tank on consumer policy issues and has contributed to legislative and regulatory developments, academic scholarship, judicial training and consumer awareness initiatives. The Chair also publishes the International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice (IJCLP) and the bi-annual newsletter March on Consumer Law and Practice.

The Chair undertakes research and policy work across diverse domains including consumer protection, e-commerce, digital markets, product safety, misleading advertisements, data protection, online dispute resolution, financial consumer protection, food and product regulation, standardisation and emerging consumer harms in the digital economy.

B. Responsibilities

The Research Assistant will work closely with the Chair Professor, faculty members and external stakeholders on the Chair’s academic, policy and outreach activities.

The Research Assistant will be responsible for:

Research and Academic Support

• Conducting doctrinal, empirical, comparative and interdisciplinary legal research on consumer law and policy issues.
• Assisting in the preparation of research reports, policy briefs, consultation responses, working papers, training manuals and academic publications.
• Tracking legislative, regulatory and judicial developments relating to consumer protection, competition, technology regulation, digital markets and allied fields.
• Assisting in literature reviews, data collection, data analysis, citation verification and reference management.
• Supporting research projects commissioned by governmental and regulatory bodies.

Publications and Knowledge Management

• Assisting with the editorial management of the International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice (IJCLP) and other Chair publications.
• Preparing case summaries, legislative updates, newsletters, blogs and website content.
• Maintaining databases of judgments, legislative materials, policy documents and research resources.

Training and Capacity Building

• Assisting in the design and delivery of training programmes, workshops, conferences, consultations, and capacity-building initiatives for consumer commissions, government officials, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.
• Supporting the preparation of training materials, presentations and background notes.

Administrative and Outreach Functions

• Coordinating with external experts, institutions, regulators and partner organisations.
• Assisting in the organisation of conferences, seminars, competitions and public engagement initiatives.
• Managing project timelines, documentation and reporting requirements.
• Supporting the Chair’s website, social media presence and dissemination activities.

C. Qualifications

Essential

• LL.B. degree from a recognised university.
• Demonstrated interest in consumer law, public policy, technology law, competition law, regulatory governance or related fields.
• Excellent legal research, analytical and writing skills.
• Familiarity with legal databases such as SCC Online, Manupatra, HeinOnline, Westlaw, LexisNexis, or equivalent resources.
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
• Strong organisational and communication skills.

Desirable

• LL.M. degree or enrolment in an LL.M. programme.
• Prior experience as a research assistant, law clerk, academic researcher, journal editor, or policy researcher.
• Experience with empirical research methodologies, data analysis or policy research.
• Publications in journals, blogs, newspapers or edited volumes.
• Experience in organising academic events, workshops, or conferences.
• Familiarity with citation standards, academic publishing, and manuscript editing.
