February 28, 2023

We are delighted and proud to announce that our team from NLSIU was declared as the winning team at the 24th D. M. Harish Memorial International Online Moot Court Competition 2023 organised by Government Law College, Mumbai. The team also bagged the Best Memorial Award at the competition.

Team

Vedika Warrier, II year, BA LLB (Hons)
Nandini Sharma, II year, BA LLB (Hons)
Manhar Bansal, II year, BA LLB (Hons), who was also awarded the Best Speaker (Finals) in the prestigious competition.

The team members shared their experience of participating in the competition.

On winning the competition:

It was a proud and historic moment for us as we brought back the trophy to Law School after a gap of 17 years (NLS last won the Moot in 2006).

On the mooting experience:

The problem was based on public international law and covered a broad range of issues ranging from genocide, investment arbitration to citizenship and extradition. The competition had a memo qualifier round, where we emerged as the top-qualifying team; after which 16 teams from India and abroad made it to the oral rounds that took place online in February 2023. Our team prevailed through the two preliminary rounds, the quarter-finals and the semi-finals, to win the final rounds against RGNUL, Patiala. The rounds were judged by sitting Judges of the Bombay HC, senior advocates and other legal luminaries. It was an extremely enriching and memorable experience.

The Compromis – as the problem was officially called – had consumed our lives for the past 3 months. The Competition challenged us to push our limits and hone our research, writing and oral advocacy skills. Most importantly perhaps, we forged new friendships and discovered a most fascinating domain of international law.

Acknowledgements:

We are extremely thankful to our coach – Vidisha Singh [V Year, BA LLB (Hons)] – for her continued support and guidance, right from the initial brainstorming sessions to the multiple drafts of the memorials and the speaker notes. We are also grateful to all other seniors who took our practice rounds and helped us in our preparation.
