Call for Applications | Archivist, QAMRA Archival Project, NLSIU

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) invites applications for an Archivist position at Queer Archive for Memory, Reflection and Activism (QAMRA). The position is for one year and will be extended for another year subject to performance. The position is based at NLSIU campus in Bengaluru.

About the Project

QAMRA is a physical, multimedia archive that chronicles the lives of persons marginalised on the basis of gender and sexuality in India. It is hosted at the National Law School of India University in Bengaluru. QAMRA’s activities span archival processes, research and public engagement.

Dr Siddharth Narrain is the Faculty Director for this project.

About the Role

The Archivist will contribute to the development and implementation of archival processes and support the broader functioning of the archive. The role offers opportunities to build skills in working with multimedia collections, archival software, and the socio-legal contexts of queer lives in India.

Responsibilities

  • Support and develop end-to-end archival workflows, including:
    • Acquisition
    • Sorting and arrangement
    • Cataloguing
    • Curation
    • Digitisation
  • Work with a range of formats, including multimedia materials
  • Contribute to research projects through the organisation, sorting, and categorisation of materials
  • Support public engagement activities, including:
    • Designing posters and communications materials
    • Maintaining and updating social media
  • Facilitate access to the archive for researchers and visitors
  • Provide support to the project coordinator and chief archivist when needed

Qualifications

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university.
  • At least two years of post-qualification work experience.

Desirable

  • Strong writing skills in English required
  • Strong reading and writing skills in Kannada and/or Tamil preferred
  • Computer literacy, including familiarity with spreadsheet software (e.g. Excel or equivalent)
  • Prior archival experience is an advantage, but not required
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and provide consistent updates
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in queer movement.

Reporting and Compensation

The Archivist will report to the Chief Archivist and the Faculty Director, QAMRA.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and will be in the range of Rs 40,000/- to Rs 50,000/- per month.
