The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) invites applications for an Assistant Archivist to work at the Queer Archive for Memory, Reflection and Activism (QAMRA). The position is for one year and will be extended for another year subject to performance. The position is based at NLSIU campus in Bengaluru.
About the Project
QAMRA is a physical, multimedia archive that chronicles the lives of persons marginalised on the basis of gender and sexuality in India. It is hosted at the National Law School of India University in Bengaluru. QAMRA’s activities span archival processes, research and public engagement.
Dr Siddharth Narrain is the Faculty Director for this project.
About the Role
The Assistant Archivist will support the day-to-day functioning of the archive, assisting with all aspects of archival work as well as public-facing and administrative tasks. This is an entry-level role suited to someone with limited prior experience but a strong interest in archival practices and queer history.
Responsibilities
- Support end-to-end archival processes, including:
- Acquisitions
- Preservation
- Sorting and arrangement
- Cataloguing
- Database management
- Assist with the management and maintenance of archival records and systems
- Support visitor and researcher access, including managing on-site visits
- Assist with communications, including social media and outreach
- Provide logistical and administrative support for events and public programmes
Qualifications
Essential
- Bachelors’ degree in from a recognised university.
Desirable
- Strong writing skills in English required
- Strong reading and writing skills in Kannada and/or Tamil preferred
- Interest in archival practices and queer histories
- Basic computer literacy
- Ability to work independently and take initiative on tasks
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to provide regular updates and communicate progress clearly
- Prior archival experience not required
- Demonstrated interest and experience in queer movement

Reporting and Compensation
The Assistant Archivist will report to the Chief Archivist.
Compensation will be up to Rs 30,000/- per month.
