CSSEIP | Two-Day State-Level Awareness Workshop for Manual Scavengers

A two-day workshop titled “Strengthening Rehabilitation Programmes and Exploring Future Possibilities for Manual Scavengers in Karnataka” was jointly organised by the Dr. Babu Jagjivan Ram Research Institute, Department of Social Welfare, Government of Karnataka, in collaboration with the Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP), National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru. The programme was held on 11th–12th June 2026 at the Regional Institute of English, South India (RIESI), Jnana Bharathi Campus, Bangalore University, Bengaluru.
The workshop brought together approximately 150 participants from different districts of Karnataka, including manual scavengers, Safai Karmacharis, community representatives, government officials, researchers, civil society organisations, social activists, and representatives of community-based organisations. The deliberations focused on rehabilitation programmes, alternative livelihoods, education, healthcare, social security, skill development, and the effective implementation of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and Their Rehabilitation Act, 2013.
