Course Description

This course is designed as a high level introductory course for political economy that introduces both primary as well as secondary writings on political economy and the debates within it. It uses a temporal logic to delve into some of the core concerns of political economy like value across classical, Marxist and neoclassical economics while also subjecting these arguments to a larger socio-political critique. Political Economy, put simply is an ‘order of things’­ that defines our relationship with the material world. Fields like taxation law and economic policy work precisely on organising and reorganising this relationship between people and things. This course is an attempt to pry open this open to ask a few fundamental questions that question the assumptions some of these fields of expertise work with. By bringing together mainstream political economy texts in conversation with sociotechnical critiques of economy, this course is an attempt to throw light on the human condition through the lens of economy. The course also leans on works of fiction to bring together these  two divergent strains of thinking.
