About National Law School of India University (NLSIU)

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) was established in 1987 to be a pioneer in legal education. Over the last three decades, the University has evolved as an innovative leader in law, social sciences, humanities, and public policy education and research in India. It has also been ranked first among the law universities in the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) for the last eight years.

About the Role

The Shri Narayan Rao Melgiri Memorial National Law Library, National Law School of India University, Bengaluru invites applications for two Library Trainees. These are contractual positions for a period of six months (from the date of appointment), based in Bengaluru, and may be extended if required.

Duties and responsibilities

  • The Library Trainee will work closely with the librarians at NLSIU and will be responsible for the following tasks:
    • Catalogue Management (KOHA & Manual Records): Undertake copy cataloguing using Z39.50 (Library of Congress), edit and standardise records as per MARC21 and RDA/AACR2, correct bibliographic fields (author, title, edition, publication, pagination, subjects, classification), verify holdings data, and update legacy records where automated data is unavailable.
    • Digitised Collections Management (Calibre): Review scanned PDFs for completeness and quality, add and standardise metadata, and update accession numbers, call numbers, and edition details to ensure accurate digital records.
    • DANS (Dissertations Repository) Maintenance: Correct dissertation titles and URLs, update abstracts, and complete or refine metadata to enhance accuracy, consistency, and discoverability.

     

Selected candidates will be given training in all sections of the library. They are expected to spend a considerable amount of time cataloguing resources as per MARC & AACR II standards.

The library operates from 9:00 AM to 12:00 AM, and the selected candidates may be required to work in shifts on a rotational basis, including weekends and holidays.

Essential Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent from a recognised University or Institute.

 Essential Skills and Competencies

  • Excellent general skills with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word), KOHA, DSPACE and IT skills.
  • Cataloguing resources as per MARC & AACR II standards.

Essential Experience

  • No prior experience is required. Freshers are preferred.

Honorarium

  • Commensurate with qualification and will be in the range of INR 20,000 – 25,000 per month.
