Gendering Caste is an interdisciplinary module drawing on Gender and Dalit studies. The module’s key concern is to examine the forms and processes through which caste governs everyday life in contemporary India. The module weaves together scholarship from disciplines of gender studies and Dalit studies towards a critical perspective building for third-year students. The starting point of the module is to destabilise the association of caste with Dalit bodies, it does so by centre staging the Dalit experience of everyday to throw light back at the caste system. Through a navigation of the everyday life in post-colonial India, the module aims to build a critical perspective on gender and caste. The module draws on tradition and rich scholarship on education, law, labour, movements and popular culture to reflect on contemporary Indian social structure.
