NLSIU Tops NIRF Law Rankings 2025 – 8 Years and Counting!

September 4, 2025

We are proud and honoured to be ranked #1 in the NIRF Law Rankings 2025 for the 8th consecutive year!

On September 4, 2025, Minister for Education, Shri. Dharmendra Pradhan, released the 10th Edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) results at the Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. Dr. Saurabh Bhattacharjee, Associate Professor of Law and Dean-Academics, received the honour on behalf of the University.

This consistent performance rests on the exceptional efforts of the NLS faculty, staff and students. The guidance and support of our Governing Bodies, including Judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts, Ministers and Officers of the Government of Karnataka, the Chairperson and Members of the Bar Council of India (BCI) is the foundation that makes this outstanding performance possible.

Expressing his gratitude, Prof. (Dr.) Sudhir Krishnaswamy, NLSIU Vice-Chancellor, noted: “NLS has consistently delivered extraordinary teaching and learning practices over the last three decades. Nevertheless, we continue to innovate and have institutionalised small group learning and assessment exercises into every course this Academic Year. We are reinventing our approach to Research and Professional Practice through a new Research Fellowships programme dedicated to path-breaking research in law, social sciences, public policy, and related disciplines. We will provide enhanced funding support to faculty research and develop a more flexible research leave policy. We look forward to partnering with philanthropic organisations, governments, corporations and civil society to build a national leader that can shape the global conversation.”

Prof. (Dr.) Nigam Nuggehalli, the Registrar of the University, emphasised the ongoing infrastructural transformation of the University. “We are currently redeveloping the 30-acre campus, including the additional 7-acres of land parcel recently allocated to the University by the Government of Karnataka. The University aims to accommodate the most diverse and inclusive student and faculty body from across India in world-class academic, residential and sporting facilities. We are scheduled to deliver new sporting facilities in 2025, academic buildings in 2026, and residential facilities in 2027 and beyond. We will need significant philanthropic contributions and government support to deliver these facilities while maintaining student fees at affordable levels.”

About NIRF Rankings

Launched in 2015-16 by the then Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) (now the Ministry of Education), the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranks higher education institutions across India. The institutes are ranked under various categories including universities, colleges, engineering, management, pharmacy, law, medical, architecture, dental and research. The category of ‘Law’ was added to these rankings in 2018, and since then, NLSIU has consistently maintained the top rank.
