Careers & Internships

About Career Services Office (CSO)

The Career Services Office (CSO) at National Law School of India University serves as the primary interface between students and recruiters, implementing a systematic approach to recruitment and career development. The CSO facilitates internships, graduate recruitment and industry engagement across all academic programs while strengthening long-term partnerships with employers. Our students contribute meaningfully across sectors from law firms, corporates and startups to NGOs, public institutions, and civil society organisations.

Academic Calendar

The academic year runs from July to June with three trimesters and internship breaks:

July – September – Trimester I
October – Break/Internship
November – January – Trimester II
February – Break/Internship
March – May | Trimester III
June – Break/Internship

Internships

Internships are a core component of the academic program at NLSIU and are designed to integrate classroom learning with real-world experience in diverse professional settings.

Students across BA (Hons.), BALLB (Hons.), LLB (Hons.), and MPP programmes undertake in-person internships during trimester breaks (February, June, and October months) typically spanning one month. Each programme has a structured internship format and assessment framework.

Legal Internships

Students of the BA LLB (Hons) and LLB (Hons) programmes typically undertake compulsory internships in the month of February. These internships carry academic credits and supervisors are required to evaluate the performance of their students.

  • All BA LLB students (across the five years) are required to undertake an internship of 25 working days in February-March every year.
  • All LLB (Hons) students (across the three years) are required to undertake an internship of 25 working days in February-March every year.
  • LL.M and MPP students are also required to undertake internship in February-March.

BA (Hons) Programme:

1st Year: Immersive internship with grassroots organizations advancing social change
2nd Year: Professional internship in law, consulting, media, or policy
3rd Year: Placement internship geared toward post-graduation employment

Master’s Programme in Public Policy (MPP):

Rural Immersion and Experiential Learning: Fieldwork internship with grassroots organizations to critically examine public policy in practice.

Client-Led Projects: Students work with organizations to solve real-world policy challenges using analytical, legal and field-based skills.

Graduate Recruitments

NLSIU’s campus recruitment process is designed to be fair, transparent, and aligned with institutional values. Campus recruitments are conducted on a rolling basis throughout the academic year providing flexibility for recruiters and students while enabling continuous engagement with prospective employers.

Our graduates build careers with leading organisations worldwide including top law firms, corporates, financial institutions, consulting firms, policy organisations, multilateral agencies and think tanks.

Several graduates also pursue litigation practice, judicial clerkships, civil services and careers in academia reflecting the breadth and depth of career pathways nurtured at NLSIU.

Placement opportunities are organized each year for B.A., LL.B students in the first trimester of their fifth year, and the outgoing LL.M students.
The same is conducted for final year students of the MPP programme in January every year.

Organisations/firms interested in offering full-time jobs to the graduating batches are encouraged to fill out and submit the form provided here: NLSIU Graduate Recruitment.

Industry Connect

We host engagement events to connect students with sector experts. Formats include recruiter presentations, alumni interactions and talks on legal practice, policy careers and emerging fields. These sessions help students understand sector trends, build professional networks and make informed career choices.

Partner With Us

We invite organisations to partner with us for graduate recruitment, internships, industry interactions and long-term collaborations.

Careers Services Team

Recruitment Coordination Committee (Student group)

Each outgoing batch elects a Recruitment Coordination Committee (RCC) from amongst its own students, which networks with advocates, law firms and companies interested in recruiting NLSIU students. The recruitment process has so far unfailingly enjoyed a 100 per cent success rate, and in recent years has even attracted major foreign recruiters. Some also opt for careers in the academic and voluntary sectors. Apart from this, many of our students secure admissions to prestigious universities each year for further study (many of them with scholarships such as the Rhodes, Inlaks, British Chevening among others).
