“I am a political theorist, but I am not restricted by discipline. My PhD was in political theory, MA in history, and BA in sociology. I also have a PG diploma in journalism. All of these have impacted what I read and how I write. I teach two core courses on political science and an elective on Carl Schmitt at NLSIU. My current research interest is the Indian Emergency, and I was awarded a UGC-DAAD fellowship to work on a paper on this topic. A book I would recommend to our students to make sense of major themes in Indian politics would be Shruti Kapila’s Violent Fraternity: Indian Political Thought in the Global Age – I would suggest reading this book along with Schmitt’s The Concept of the Political.”

“I come from a small town in West Bengal, called Chinsurah. I earned my undergraduate degree in Political Science from Jadavpur University and moved to Delhi to pursue my postgraduate and subsequently, doctoral degrees as an alumna of Jawaharlal Nehru University. The entire journey shapes who I am.

While I specialised in International Politics, my first tryst with the discipline began by asking- “where are the women?” and the quest continues. As a researcher, I regularly write on pertinent socio-political issues, especially matters related to gender. As a teacher, I envision myself inculcating critical thinking among students, especially in an interwoven domain of ‘personal’, ‘political’, and ‘international’.

In the personal sphere, I love experimenting in my cooking lab, nurturing the plants in my mini garden, and making friends with my neighbourhood dogs, amongst many more.”

“I fondly recall my first interaction with NLS back in 2019, while I was still working at CLPR. I was struck by how well-read the students were. I am thrilled to now be joining the vibrant intellectual community here.

Prior to joining NLS, I pursued an LLM from Cambridge on a full scholarship. I’m currently working on two research projects. The first arose out of my Cambridge dissertation, wherein I critiqued the Indian Supreme Court’s borrowing of Canadian indirect discrimination doctrine. The second interrogates variations in standards of review in fundamental rights adjudication to uncover issues of legal indeterminacy.”

I handle courses in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Econometrics, and it’s a delight to teach students who are bright, inquisitive, and always up for a lively discussion. I research on issues related to farming, multiple job holding, and environment – topics that benefit from the vibrant exchange of ideas here.
