How does this course relate to the programme curriculum: Does it develop on a prior course in the

programme or is it a foundational or standalone course?

Response: It is a standalone foundational course. It is designed for students of public policy and the

pre-requisites include completion of foundational courses in public policy and economics.

Describe how you have approached the course. What have you included/excluded and why? Choice of

materials: primary or secondary readings / case law;

Response: Readings have been included to offer a combination of rudimentary tenets of public health,

case studies that will study the interlinkages of health, policy and their interplays in the process of

development, specifically and largely in the Indian context. Readings that deal with the policy

manifestations in allied fields such as other disciplines in social sciences – anthropology, sociology

and communication have not been included. Instead, the focus is specifically on the evolution and

associative operations of public policy in a social structure in the development scenario and eventually

within the health sector.

Describe your pedagogical method: lectures, Socratic discussion, seminar style discussion, response

papers or group work, field work;

Response: The course will be a combination of lectures, seminars and group work. Lectures will focus

on context setting, presentation of theoretical frameworks and underpinnings; the seminars will be a

presentation of interpretive analysis of cases and papers and the group work will be simulation

exercises of what is learned including role plays of interplay, ethics in public health, evolution and

execution of policy in health systems.

Describe the layout of the course: module structure and sequence.
