Meet Our New Students | 3 -Year LLB (Hons) Programme

July 11, 2022

We are excited to welcome our very first batch of the 3-Year LLB (Hons) programme this year! The first cohort comprises 55 students who come from various backgrounds – at least 12 different educational disciplines within the group.

We spoke to a few of our new students from the incoming batch who shared their goals and interests. We wish all the very best to our new students for their academic journeys ahead.

Mehr Gandhi

I was born in Chandigarh but grew up in New Delhi. I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in History from St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi. I was also a Humanities student at school – I was particularly fond of History, Psychology, and also Political Science. With these subjects, I was already interested in Law during my Class XII. But I did not go all in with my preparations at the time and first decided to do an undergraduate degree for two reasons: a) I was really  fond of History and b) I thought History would provide very good context and perspective while studying the law. During my undergrad, we had the opportunity to do special assignments and a lot of times, I would pick something that had something to do with law. I wasn’t very hopeful of getting in, but I wanted to give it my best shot. Once NLS happened, there was no question of not joining – both for personal and institutional reasons!

Looking forward: For me, Delhi was a city where I could not step out after a particular time of day for safety reasons. Here, I am looking forward to getting out of that protected zone and explore the city and interact with the city and its people. It will be impossible to do justice to any profession without that kind of interaction. My friends and I are also super excited about the Library here! Besides the classes, the faculty and resources that are made available to us, I also get a chance to play football!

Plans ahead: I am interested in Constitutional law, and Criminal Law to some extent. In the future, I may also be inclined towards academia and teaching. However, at this point of time, I would like to first learn as much as I can through the courses over these three years and then make an informed decision regarding a career path ahead.

Interests & Hobbies: I was obsessed with playing football at school and now at NLS, I re-started playing football after a gap of seven years, (with great pain due to the lack of practice might I add!) I also have a lot of interest in Psychology, mental health, and learning languages. I am keen to pick up Kannada as well and have so far been studying sign boards 🙂

I originally am from Bijapur, but pursued my education in Bangalore. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Rajareddy Institute of Technology. When I was pursuing my PUC (Pre-University), I did have ideas of pursuing law. However, since I secured an engineering seat at the time, my family encouraged me to take it up. After graduating, I worked for a brief period. However, I felt it was not what I wanted to do and felt a pull toward studying law. Two years ago, I had even applied for the 3-Year law programme at Delhi University, but had just missed securing a seat. So, when NLS announced the 3-Year LLB (Hons) programme, I immediately applied for the NLSAT.

Plans ahead: At present, I just want to focus on the programme and learn everything that I have to. At the end of the three years, I would like to work in District or Taluk courts or even State Services.

Interests & Hobbies: I like playing Cricket and watching movies. To unwind, I like spending time with friends or like to go on walks.

Nishtha Jindal

I completed my degree in B.Sc Finance from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Mumbai.  Due to my own personal experiences, I have always had an interest in pursuing law and also am intrigued by the kind of courses covered in law like Sociology, History, Political Science. At the beginning of my career, I was inclined to build a path in the direction of Finance as it pays very well.  However, I realised eventually that this was not my cup of tea. I realised I should stick to my original plan of pursuing law – and it so happened that NLS introduced this 3-Year LLB programme around the same time. NLS was my first choice for this programme. I believe I thrive in an environment where there is academic rigour and I feel NLS will be that space for me. Now, I’m hoping that with the intersection of my finance degree with the law, I can do something useful with it.

Plans ahead: I had earlier worked in the industry briefly where I realised several lawyers may not have a clear idea on how the commercial or the financial world, be it securities or capital markets, work. One wonders if the laws are being applied blindly. It is hard to adapt to the rigour of the capital markets and private and public markets. I think I would be a good person to bridge that gap, and find my niche in that area and provide value to my clients as I would understand both sides, from the corporate side as well as from the perspective of a lawyer – a good interplay between both fields.
