Understanding of Politics and Society in India is an integral part of understanding public policy processes. One cannot understand politics outside of its social context and vice versa.  This course aspires to tie the sociological and political lens to understanding India. Though at several moments, the course traverses beyond the geographical borders of India, the emphasis is to locate India and its institutions historically and theoretically.  At the intersection of the social and political, this course is intended to introduce students of public policy to appreciate why policymaking in India is inherently complex. This course would allow students to appreciate the fact that policymaking does not happen in a vacuum but is essentially a political act.
