This is an elective course offered in the third trimester of Masters Programme in Public Policy. This course aims to introduce students to the field of social policy and its applications in Indian context.

Course approaches the domain through the lens of governance rather than sectoral approach. Sectoral approaches of social policy involve addressing life stage challenges (child care, unemployment, maternity, disability, pension, health care, education, housing and inequality). On the other hand, governance approach transcends these sectoral questions to find a cohesive response to capitalism.

The course is primarily theoretical in nature. There is obvious absence of theorization of social policy question in Indian context. A theoretical approach has led social policy question to be seen as ideology. Is there anything in social policy beyond ideology? The aim is to build intellectual capacity among students to approach redistributive question in robust, scientific and comparable manner.
