Undergraduate Degrees

NLSIU offers two undergraduate programmes. The five-year integrated undergraduate BA LLB (Hons) Degree Programme, pioneered by NLSIU, provides a strong foundation to pursue professional options or further academic opportunities.

In Academic Year 2025-26, the University welcomed its first cohort of the new NLS BA (Hons) Programme!

Postgraduate Degrees

NLSIU’s postgraduate programmes include the one-year Master of Laws (LLM) Programme, the two-year Master’s Programme in Public Policy (MPP), and the 3-Year LLB (Hons) Programme. The MPP is an interdisciplinary programme that provides comprehensive training in designing, translating, and evaluating the efficacy of policies.

Research Degrees

Our research degree programmes are intended for students and practitioners keen on pursuing advanced studies, research and scholarship. The University offers the following doctoral programmes: Ph.D (Law), and Ph.D (Social Sciences, Humanities and Public Policy) Programme.

Online & Hybrid Programmes

The Online and Hybrid Programmes offered by NLSIU’s Professional And Continuing Education (PACE) is intended to make legal education more accessible to interested students and practitioners who desire flexibility in location/time. We offer 10 programmes across various domains to graduates of any discipline from a recognised University.

Research

Over the last three decades, NLS has played a significant role in legal research and reform. This has included working on key legislation that has shaped India’s development. Its specialised research centres have been repeatedly called upon to shape laws and improve implementation in intellectual property, child rights, and environmental laws, among many others. Our focus areas for the path ahead include state capacity in the 21st century, issues of law and technology, the future of work and legal system reform.

“I am a political theorist, but I am not restricted by discipline. My PhD was in political theory, MA in history, and BA in sociology. I also have a PG diploma in journalism. All of these have impacted what I read and how I write. I teach two core courses on political science and an elective on Carl Schmitt at NLSIU. My current research interest is the Indian Emergency, and I was awarded a UGC-DAAD fellowship to work on a paper on this topic. A book I would recommend to our students to make sense of major themes in Indian politics would be Shruti Kapila’s Violent Fraternity: Indian Political Thought in the Global Age – I would suggest reading this book along with Schmitt’s The Concept of the Political.”

“I come from a small town in West Bengal, called Chinsurah. I earned my undergraduate degree in Political Science from Jadavpur University and moved to Delhi to pursue my postgraduate and subsequently, doctoral degrees as an alumna of Jawaharlal Nehru University. The entire journey shapes who I am.

While I specialised in International Politics, my first tryst with the discipline began by asking- “where are the women?” and the quest continues. As a researcher, I regularly write on pertinent socio-political issues, especially matters related to gender. As a teacher, I envision myself inculcating critical thinking among students, especially in an interwoven domain of ‘personal’, ‘political’, and ‘international’.

In the personal sphere, I love experimenting in my cooking lab, nurturing the plants in my mini garden, and making friends with my neighbourhood dogs, amongst many more.”

“I fondly recall my first interaction with NLS back in 2019, while I was still working at CLPR. I was struck by how well-read the students were. I am thrilled to now be joining the vibrant intellectual community here.

Prior to joining NLS, I pursued an LLM from Cambridge on a full scholarship. I’m currently working on two research projects. The first arose out of my Cambridge dissertation, wherein I critiqued the Indian Supreme Court’s borrowing of Canadian indirect discrimination doctrine. The second interrogates variations in standards of review in fundamental rights adjudication to uncover issues of legal indeterminacy.”

“Teaching at NLSIU has been a refreshing and rewarding experience. I handle courses in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Econometrics, and it’s a delight to teach students who are bright, inquisitive, and always up for a lively discussion. Being on this beautiful campus feels like reliving my own college days, with the added joy of working alongside colleagues from diverse disciplines.

I research on issues related to farming, multiple job holding, and environment – topics that benefit from the vibrant exchange of ideas here. NLSIU offers the perfect space to explore economics from multiple perspectives, both academic and lived. I feel that I’m always learning something new and that’s what makes this journey exciting!”
