In this course, we introduce students to the technical components of litigation. Students will be taught how to navigate a trial from beginning to end. Through the term, we will focus on building skills in the following areas:

  1. Client Interviewing and Counselling
  2. Planning litigation strategy
  3. Drafting
  4. Preparing Case Briefs
  5. Filing and e-filing
  6. Preparing and Maintaining a Case File
  7. Case Management
  8. Examination-in-chief and Cross Examination
  9. Preparing a witness
  10. Oral and Written Arguments

The course will be conducted using a combination of simulation exercises, drafting assignments, and individual writing projects. Students will be paired up in the first week, and assigned case sheets which will form the basis of their assignments over the term. Within the pair, students shall be assigned the roles of plaintiff/defendant and they will conduct the entire trial over the course of the term. Each class will consist of 14 groups, and submission deadlines and evaluation will be done in a staggered manner.

The objective of this course is to teach students skills that are essential to trial court litigation.
