Firdaus-e-Alfaaz (Poetry Collective)

In association with the Student Bar Association, Firdaus-E-Alfaz is the very first poetry club at NLS, founded on 15th February by a group of five intrepid students, having identified the absence of a true ground for poetry to flourish at the law school. Chosen by a popular vote among suggestions from the poetry-loving student community, the word means ‘The Heaven of Words’, reflecting our vision for a place where words can flow free, much like people in Firdaus.

Our very purpose is to try to keep the poetry culture living on campus; to make it something interesting, fun, and full of opportunities for the student body. We strive to build a warm, reliable, and friendly environment. One where sharing one’s poems is more of a connecting act rather than a threatening event. Being multilingual at heart, the club entertains all languages and styles of poetry in a balanced manner with performances, learning events, and discussions.

Since our inception, Reading Between the Lines has become a flagship series, allowing eminent poets to meet students, with our first session having Sahar Romani being a cherished milestone. We also organize reading circles and open mics and have ambitious plans for a Pan-India poetry magazine and an annual literature festival. External collaborations are also on the line, with the entire structure built for expansion, PR, admin, finance, and event management teams in place, with two co-conveners managing the whole thing.

In a matter of time, Firdaus-e-Alfaz has ferried poetry from the margins of campus literary culture to the forefront of open spaces-for-dialogue and even faculty engagement in student-led discussions. Looking ahead, one foresees an independent club with a celebrated magazine, bigger flagship events, poetry competitions from outside, and a fully active membership.

Because between life and law, we found poetry, and we are here to ask: what will your verse be?
