NLS Film Collective (NLSFC)

The NLS Film Collective is one of the most fun and activity-based collectives at NLSIU, Bengaluru. Unlike most of the other committees and collectives, Film Collective focusses more on non-academic interests, such as films and attempts to build a film culture among the NLS community. This Collective provides a platform to those people who have an active interest in films and cinema and want to pursue their passion towards films during their time in NLSIU. The Collective aims to organise multiple kinds of events like movie screenings, cinema discussions, film festivals, etc., to build an active engagement between films and the NLSIU community.

History

The Film Collective at NLSIU was formed in December 2024 by four students: Dhruv Maurya, Riddhi Puranik, Pankhuri and Yash Goyal, who felt a lack of dedicated space and opportunities within the university to pursue their passion for cinema. They came together with the shared vision of creating a community where students could freely explore and celebrate their interest in films, fostering creative expression beyond academic boundaries.

This initiative emerged from the desire to build a supportive platform that encourages collective experiences around cinema, filling a gap in campus life for those drawn to storytelling, film appreciation, and filmmaking. The founding members aimed to cultivate an inclusive environment that nurtures film culture, allowing students from diverse backgrounds and disciplines to engage with varied cinematic genres and discussions.

Aim

The Film Collective at NLSIU seeks to cultivate a vibrant film culture on campus by going beyond passive viewing to foster a deeper understanding of cinema. Our aim is to explore the multifaceted nature of films, not just as entertainment, but as powerful media that reflect and influence society. We strive to engage students in meaningful conversations about the societal impact of cinema, while also delving into the technical aspects of filmmaking to enhance appreciation for the craft.

By encouraging active participation through screenings, cinema discussions, workshops, and collaborative projects, the collective aims to nurture students’ passion for cinema, broaden their cinematic understanding, and build an active community that appreciates film as an art form and a tool for storytelling and social awareness.

Work

  • When this Collective was formed, movie screenings were one of our primary verticals. The idea behind this vertical is to introduce the NLSIU community to different kinds of cinema. In our aim to broaden the cinematic understanding of movies, we’ve screened movies of different genres, such as Shahid (a movie on law and justice), Grave of the Fireflies (a classic Studio Ghibli movie), Dead Poet’s Society (a tale of poetry and purpose), India’s Daughter (a banned documentary), and many others.
  • In collaboration with the Cultural and Fine Arts Committee, we organised a Film Talk with our NLS Alumnus, Mr. Ankur Singla, who has recently made his debut in the film industry through his first film: Ghich Pich. In this talk, he interacted with the NLS students about his journey from law school to a filmmaker and also the technicalities of filmmaking.

  • The Film Collective has also started a Cinema Circle named “Page to Projection”, which creates a space where there is a dedicated discussion towards a particular theme, fortnightly between a faculty member and the student community. In its inaugural session, Professor Soumya Vats moderated the discussion on Horror Cinema and its Social Phenomenon. This format allowed the fellow film enthusiasts in NLSIU to come together and share their thoughts towards a particular topic in films.

  • The Collective also has its own website, on which the people from the NLSIU community can post their blogs about movies, characters, genres, or anything related to cinema etc. This platform provides a dedicated space where people can share their thoughts towards films and cinema. You can check out their website through this link: https://nlsfilmcollective.wordpress.com
  • Apart from these, the Collective has filmmaking and photography in its mandate as well. The Collective provides a space where people who are interested in filmmaking or photography can pursue their interests in the law school, and the aim is to encourage the NLSIU community to learn more about these art forms.
  • The Collective also has an active social media presence, and it creates its own content, like movie recommendations, movie reviews, screening updates, and many other forms of short-form content to build a robust and active film community. Accomplishments

Every year in the first trimester, there is a campus fair which is organised where every committee and collective puts up their stall to introduce the committee/collective to the new batches of students in NLSIU. This year, NLS Film Collective’s stall was ranked 2nd best among all the other stalls. We received active engagement from the new students and amazing movie recommendations since we kept an activity for them in which we asked them to write their four favourite films, and we stuck their notes on our stall.
