NLS Quiz Club (NLSQC)

One of the youngest student-run organisations at NLSIU, the NLS Quiz Club (affectionately known as QC) was formed in August 2024. Before this, quizzing had fallen under the mandate of the Literary and Debating Society (LnD) although it had its unique identity and culture. NLS has been home to a vibrant quizzing culture, with many of its alumni such as Sidharth Chauhan, Arghya Sengupta, Pallavi Khatri and many others having brought home accolades at various national-level events. In 2022, the quizzing community began a process to give quizzing an independent identity, allowing it to reach out to a wider audience. This led to the formation of the Law School Quizzing Circle in 2023, via which senior quizzers organised open-air quizzes financed via crowdfunding. The large turnouts and enthusiastic support from the student body led the Quiz Club to be formed as its own organisation, comprising seasoned and amateur quizzers alike, united by a love for the activity.

In its first year of operation, the QC has helped in bringing quizzing as a mainstream aspect of the campus life at NLS, with regular quizzes on a variety of subjects. Be it our regular India quizzes or our much-beloved Brainrot and Memes quiz, or the various niche topics we covered ranging from Formula:1 to technology and gaming, our events have covered a wide range of subjects. Some of our highlights include the Financial Literacy Quiz supported by Zerodha Varsity, our India Quiz hosted by Prof. Prateek Vijayavargia, the faculty mixer quiz on NLS history, and Tamasha, the annual cinema quiz held in collaboration with the Cultural Committee (CulComm) on occasion of the Univ Week. Besides our events, we also continue the Law School Quizzing Circle as a WhatsApp community with almost 300 members, where we share trivia, fun questions, and updates on quizzes in and around Bengaluru.

Our flagship event – the National Law School Quiz, is held in March each year. This year’s edition was supported by sponsors such as Manupatra and Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Ltd. (the company behind the iconic Mysore Sandal Soap) and saw over eight quizzes by seasoned quizmasters such as Major Chandrakant Nair, Dr. Arul Mani, and many others. More than 200 students from across the country competed for a prize pool of over Rs. 1.1 lakhs.

The QC has also supported various teams travelling to universities in Bengaluru and beyond, winning accolades at quizzes organised by Christ University, M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, R.V. College of Engineering, and pan-India quiz competitions such as ConQuest and the Sweden-India Memorial Quiz. At the same time, we have held novice quizzes and orientation sessions for beginners, especially women and gender minorities to allow diversity and inclusion in quizzing. The QC continues to work towards reclaiming the label of ‘nerd’ as an expression of the love for knowledge and competitiveness. Ultimately quizzing is not about knowing everything – we strongly believe that, at its core, being a quizzer is persevering despite getting the occasional trivia wrong.
